Mudras are symbolic hand gestures used in yoga and meditation, derived from Sanskrit meaning “seal,” “mark,” or “gesture.” They help support balance in the body, enhancing focus, calmness, and overall wellbeing. Simple and accessible, mudras can be practiced in any position and are often combined with breathwork to support relaxation, concentration, and mindfulness in daily life.
Mudras also share a deep, often under-acknowledged connection with classical Indian dance traditions, where hand gestures (hasta mudras) are used to convey stories, emotions, and meaning through movement. Beyond traditional contexts, mudras appear in the gestures of well-known figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Dalai Lama, and even in modern public life with individuals like Angela Merkel and Cristiano Ronaldo demonstrating their enduring, cross-cultural significance.
Two commonly recognized mudras in yoga:

Anjali Mudra (prayer hands): Often used at the beginning and end of practice, it symbolizes respect, gratitude, and connection. It helps center attention and encourage a calm, focused state.

Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness): Seen in many postures, including warrior poses, it represents protection and reassurance. It can support a sense of confidence, calm, and inner strength, especially in challenging moments.
